Civil Desobedience

Thoreau sees a moral distinction between failing to prevent an injustice and actually causing an injustice. Thoreau believes that people should not participate in injustice but that they do not have to actively promote a more just world. This distinction is rooted in Thoreau's belief that individuals should look inward for how they should live their lives. A person's primary duty is to be true to himself--to act with integrity and to pursue personal moral goals. Thoreau's main belief in Civil Disobedience was as simple as that; a person's principles should never be compromised even when the Government orders them to.
